Do Adults Need Fluoride Treatments?

Dental professional holding a card that says, “fluoride”

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that plays a great role in dental development. Kids who do not get enough of it can face lifelong consequences for their oral health. But what if you are now an adult? Do you still need fluoride to maintain a healthy and strong smile? Yes, fluoride can be highly beneficial for people of all ages! This blog post explains how it can support mature smiles.

Benefits of Fluoride for Adults

Not only does is fluoride important for developing teeth, but it also helps to remineralize teeth that are already mature. In other words, it helps to replace tiny bits of the enamel that get worn away through everyday use.

For adults, regular use of fluoride can lead to some big benefits:

  • A lower risk of both primary and secondary cavities. (A primary cavity is a new spot of decay, whereas a secondary cavity develops around an existing filling or crown.)
  • Protection for tooth roots. Gum recession is common among adults. As it happens, the roots can become exposed. They do not have the same hard enamel as the tops of the teeth, and fluoride can do much to protect them from damage.
  • Lower risk of problems for people with dry mouth. Saliva naturally contains minerals that strengthen the teeth, and it washes away potentially harmful food particles. Without enough saliva, there is an increased risk of decay. Fluoride can help to mitigate some of that risk.

How to Benefit Fully from Fluoride

Fluoride can be a key part of your oral care routine! Here is how to use it in a beneficial way:

  • Use oral hygiene products that contain fluoride. Most toothpastes contain fluoride; brushing twice a day (and not rinsing your mouth immediately afterward) can help you benefit from fluoride. If you need extra fluoride, your dentist might advise you to use a mouth rinse that contains it.
  • Consider a topical fluoride treatment from your dentist. During your next preventive appointment, your dental team might recommend a topical fluoride application, which is much more concentrated than the fluoride in over-the-counter hygiene products. This process takes just a few minutes and is not expensive.
  • Do not be afraid of tap water. Many municipal water sources contain small amounts of fluoride, so do not be afraid to use the water for drinking or cooking.

Fluoride can be beneficial for people of all ages! Talk to your dentist to learn how it could help you enjoy a healthy, cavity-free smile.
