Root canals have unfairly been deemed as a painful, unpleasant procedure due to the rapid spread of misinformation through movies, TV shows, and the internet. This procedure is actually virtually painless and is the only way to repair a severely infected tooth. Your dentist will administer a numbing agent before the procedure to prevent you from experiencing any discomfort. They may also offer sedation for patients who need a little extra help relaxing. After the procedure, you’ll need to take some time to heal and recover. Read on to learn about what you can expect after getting a root canal and a few ways that you can ensure the procedure is a success.

Take Pain Medicine

Root canal therapy is virtually painless and often described as being no more uncomfortable than having a large cavity filled. Even so, just like with any other dental procedure, you can expect to experience at least a little bit of discomfort. Taking over the counter pain medicine should help with this. Be sure to speak with your dentist before taking anything new to ensure that it’s safe.

Lessen Inflammation

If the area around the tooth is swollen or tender after the procedure, consider using a cold compress. This will help lessen inflammation and will also numb the area. You can also gargle with salt water to help with swelling. Additionally, this can help kill harmful bacteria near the tooth. Your dentist will give you specific instructions on how to keep your mouth clean and to avoid discomfort as much as possible.

Have Soft Foods at the Ready

After a root canal, avoid eating sharp or crunchy foods. These may be uncomfortable to eat and can also get lodged in the area near the tooth and cause issues. Instead, eat hard-boiled eggs, soups and broths, applesauce, rice, yogurt, pudding, pasta and other soft foods. Chew on the opposite side of your mouth from where the tender tooth is located.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Getting plenty of rest every night is also key to healing after a root canal procedure. This is because overexertion too close to the surgery can make it difficult for you to heal properly. For a few days after the procedure, don’t lift heavy items or participate in intense exercises. If you have a job that includes a lot of manual labor, take a few days off. Focus on getting enough rest so you can heal fully and properly.

Along with the above information, make sure to follow your dentist’s instructions as closely as possible. This will help you prevent any complications during the healing process. Soon, your smile will be as good as new!
